Can These Machiavelli Quotes Make You Learn Something?

Don't know who Machiavelli is? Today is your history lesson. Living from 1469 to 1527, Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian philosopher and writer. He is most known for his controversial leadership techniques--especially in the political range. There is even an adjective derived from the Machiavelli family: Machiavellian.

Machiavellian:cunning, scheming, and unscrupulous, especially in politics or in advancing one's career.

With Niccolo Machiavelli background covered, I hope that you have a better idea who this man was. As my favorite English teacher says, I hope you will be able to take something out of it.

"He who blinded by ambition, raises himself to a position whence he cannot mount higher, must thereafter fall with the greatest loss."

"War cannot be avoided; it can only be postponed to the other's advantage."

"Men do not know to be neither entirely good nor entirely bad"

"You have a good estimate as the lesser evil."

"A people that order, under the influence of a good constitution, will be as stable as prudent, recognizing also that a prince, what do I say? It will be even more than the prince’s most esteemed for his wisdom . On the other hand, a prince who was able to free themselves from the yoke of laws will be more ungrateful, more mobile, more reckless than the people."

"Fortune does not change for those who do not comply with the time."

"When neither their property nor their honor is touched, the majority of men live content."

“Everyone sees what you appear to be, few experience what you really are."

What does it really mean to be human? What makes a good leader? What is human nature? Machiavelli wrote about all of these topics; what are you taking to be true?
